nctioning%20of%20food%20webs.%20Indeed%2C%20a%20reduction%20in%20the%20abundance%20or%20disappearance%20of%20common%20prey%20can%20lead%20to%20an%20increased%20competition%20in%20sea%20star%20assemblages.%20In%20order%20to%20determine%20the%20ecological%20role%20of%20sea%20stars%20in%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%20and%20to%20understand%20how%20they%20might%20be%20impacted%20by%20climate%20change%2C%20a%20study%20of%20their%20trophic%20ecology%20and%20of%20the%20factors%20controlling%20it%20is%20necessary.%20Therefore%2C%20the%20objectives%20of%20this%20PhD%20thesis%20were%20to%20determine%20the%20trophic%20role%20of%20sea%20stars%20in%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%2C%20and%20how%20environmental%20factors%20such%20as%20turbidity%2C%20depth%20and%20sea%20ice%20impact%20their%20trophic%20diversity.%5CnTo%20do%20so%2C%20stable%20isotope%20values%20of%20carbon%20%28%5Cu03b413C%29%2C%20nitrogen%20%28%5Cu03b415N%29%20and%20sulfur%20%28%5Cu03b434S%29%20were%20analysed%20in%20tissues%20of%20sea%20star%20sampled%20across%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%20%28n%20%3D%202454%20individuals%2C%20plus%20data%20on%20204%20individuals%20from%20the%20literature%20or%20shared%20by%20colleagues%29.%20A%20significant%20proportion%20of%20the%20sea%20star%20samples%20came%20from%20collections%20archived%20in%20institutions%20and%5C%2For%20museums%2C%20which%20significantly%20increased%20the%20spatial%20and%20temporal%20coverage%20of%20the%20study.%20However%2C%20most%20of%20these%20samples%20were%20preserved%20in%20ethanol%2C%20and%20some%20have%20been%20previously%20fixed%20with%20formaldehyde.%20Preservative%20fluids%20may%20alter%20the%20stable%20isotope%20values%20of%20biological%20tissues.%20Therefore%2C%20the%20impact%20of%20the%20preservation%20method%20on%20the%20stable%20isotope%20values%20in%20sea%20star%20tissues%20was%20studied%20%28chapter%203%29.%20A%20two%20year-long%5Cnexperiment%20showed%20that%20it%20was%20possible%20to%20mathematically%20correct%20the%20effect%20of%20preservative%20fluids%20on%20stable%20isotope%20values%20in%20sea%20stars%2C%20making%20it%20possible%20to%20use%20archived%20samples%20for%20trophic%20ecology%20studies.%5CnIn%20order%20to%20better%20understand%20the%20potential%20importance%20of%20sea%20stars%20in%20the%20ecosystems%20of%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%2C%20the%20food%20web%20of%20subantarctic%20Macrocystis%20pyrifera%20%28Phaeophyceae%2C%20Laminariales%3B%20or%20%5Cu201ckelp%5Cu201d%29%20forests%20was%20reconstructed%20by%20analysing%20stable%20isotope%20values%20in%20invertebrate%20%2819%20taxa%2C%20including%206%20sea%20star%20taxa%29%20and%20primary%20producer%20tissues%20sampled%20in%20the%20Kerguelen%20Islands%20%28chapter%204%29.%20Mixing%20models%20did%20not%20highlight%20major%20Macrocystis%20pyrifera%20consumers%20and%20showed%20that%20the%20food%20web%20is%20supported%20by%20pelagic%20organic%20matter%20and%20live%20%28with%20the%20exception%20of%20kelp%29%20or%20detrital%20micro%5C%2Fmacrophytobenthos.%20This%20suggests%20that%20sea%20stars%20do%20not%20have%20the%20same%20ecological%20function%20in%20Macrocystis%20pyrifera%20forests%20from%20subantarctic%20regions%20than%20in%20those%20from%20more%20temperate%20regions%2C%20where%20they%20control%20grazer%20populations.%20The%20results%20also%20show%20that%20sea%20stars%20are%20not%20only%20top%20predators%20in%20the%20food%20chain.%20On%20the%20one%20hand%2C%20some%20species%20may%20occupy%20lower%20trophic%20positions.%20On%20the%20other%20hand%2C%20their%20trophic%20niches%20may%20not%20overlap%3A%20some%20species%20rely%20more%20on%20the%20food%20chain%20supported%20by%20pelagic%20production%20and%20others%20on%20the%20food%20chain%20supported%20by%20benthic%20%28including%20detrital%29%20production.%5CnFollowing%20this%20analysis%20of%20an%20entire%20food%20web%2C%20isotopic%20niches%20of%20sea%20stars%20were%20compared%20at%20a%20local%20scale%2C%20and%20the%20possible%20relationship%20between%20ontogenetic%20changes%2C%20i.e.%20changes%20during%20growth%2C%20and%20trophic%20ecology%20were%20studied%20%28chapter%205%29.%20The%20analysis%20of%20stable%20isotope%20values%20in%20sea%20stars%20sampled%20in%20Ezcurra%20Inlet%20%28Admiralty%20Bay%2C%20King%20George%20Island%2C%20South%20Shetland%20Islands%2C%20chapter%205%29%20showed%20that%20the%20size%2C%20and%20especially%20the%20central%20disc%20radius%2C%20can%20be%20linked%20to%20stable%20isotope%20values%20in%20some%20species%2C%20indicating%20the%20occurrence%20of%20ontogenetic%20changes%20in%20the%20diet%20of%20these%20species.%20This%20was%20observed%20only%20in%20some%20species%2C%20and%20notably%20omnivore%20species%2C%20for%20which%20the%20trophic%20position%20increased%20with%20body%20size.%20The%20relationship%20between%20the%20disc%20radius%20and%20the%20trophic%20ecology%20may%20be%20explained%20by%20larger%20sea%20stars%20being%20able%20to%20evert%20their%20stomach%20over%20larger%20areas%20and%20thus%20consume%20larger%20prey%20and%5C%2For%20prey%20with%20higher%20trophic%20level.%20For%20sediment%20feeding%20and%20potentially%20suspension%20feeding%20species%2C%20the%20relationship%20between%20size%20and%20stable%20isotope%20values%20was%20usually%20not%20observed%2C%20suggesting%20lower%20variability%20of%20the%20trophic%20ecology%20between%20size%20classes%20in%20these%20species.%20The%20analysis%20of%20stable%20isotope%20values%20in%20sea%20stars%20sampled%20in%20Ezcurra%20Inlet%20also%20indicates%20that%20the%20diet%20variability%20of%20some%20sea%20star%20species%20may%20be%20important%2C%20which%20in%20part%20determines%20their%20interspecific%20trophic%20interactions.%20The%20turbidity%20generated%20by%20the%20terrestrial%20inputs%20provided%20by%20meltwater%20run-off%20from%20terrestrial%20glaciers%20results%20in%20an%20important%20environmental%20gradient%20from%20the%20inner%20to%20the%20outer%5Cn%5CnEzcurra%20Inlet%2C%20which%20determines%20the%20habitat%20conditions%20and%20the%20characteristics%20of%20the%20resources%20available%20for%20sea%20stars.%20Some%20species%20may%20adapt%20their%20diet%20depending%20on%20those%20variable%20conditions.%20Interspecific%20interactions%20are%20also%20impacted.%20Indeed%2C%20the%20Diplasterias%20brandti%20and%20Odontaster%20validus%20species%20have%20more%20different%20%5Cu03b413C%20values%20%28i.e.%20more%20different%20food%20sources%29%20and%20lower%20isotopic%20niche%20overlap%20in%20the%20inner%20inlet%2C%20where%20high%20turbidity%20occurs%2C%20than%20in%20the%20outer%2C%20where%20turbidity%20is%20lower.%20Similarly%2C%20the%20size%20of%20the%20isotopic%20niche%20of%20Odontaster%20validus%20is%20smaller%20in%20the%20inner%20Ezcurra%20Inlet%20than%20in%20the%20outer.%20This%20is%20probably%20the%20result%20of%20a%20more%20limited%20availability%20and%20diversity%20of%20resources%20in%20the%20inner%20inlet.%20This%20may%20lead%20to%20the%20constriction%20of%20Odontaster%20validus%20isotopic%20niche%20and%20to%20resource%20segregation%20that%20may%20limit%20interspecific%20competition%20between%20the%20few%20species%20able%20to%20survive%20in%20these%20unfavourable%20conditions.%5CnIn%20the%20chapter%206%2C%20the%20impact%20of%20trophic%20group%2C%20depth%2C%20sea%20ice%20concentration%20and%20sea%20ice%20season%20duration%20on%20the%20trophic%20ecology%20of%20sea%20stars%20was%20assessed%20thanks%20to%20a%20global%20analysis%20of%20the%20dataset%20at%20the%20scale%20of%20the%20whole%20Southern%20Ocean.%20The%20Southern%20Ocean%20was%20subdivided%20into%20different%20benthic%20ecoregions%20according%20to%20environmental%20%28seabed%20temperature%2C%20sea%20ice%2C%20bathymetry%29%20and%20biotic%20data%20%28species%20distribution%29%2C%20to%20study%20biogeographic%20variations%20in%20the%20trophic%20ecology%20of%20sea%20stars.%20This%20subdivision%20notably%20highlighted%20the%20separation%20between%20Antarctic%20and%20Subantarctic%20environments%2C%20with%20the%20different%20%5Cu03b413C%20values%20in%20organic%20matter%20from%20the%20surface%20in%20Subantarctic%20and%20Antarctic%20waters%20being%20reflected%20in%20tissues%20from%20benthic%20sea%20stars.%20In%20this%20chapter%2C%20the%20compilation%20of%20the%20available%20information%20on%20their%20diet%20allowed%20to%20make%20a%20classification%20of%20sea%20star%20taxa%20from%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%20into%20trophic%20groups%2C%20ranging%20from%20suspension%20feeders%20to%20predators%20of%20active%20prey.%20The%20differences%20of%20stable%20isotope%20values%20between%20trophic%20groups%20and%20their%20variability%20in%20some%20of%20them%20suggested%20a%20diversity%20of%20food%20sources%20and%5C%2For%20of%20feeding%20strategies%20between%20and%20within%20trophic%20groups.%20These%20results%20confirm%20that%2C%20contrary%20to%20what%20is%20sometimes%20stated%20in%20the%20literature%2C%20sea%20stars%20in%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%20show%20a%20great%20trophic%20diversity.%20Depth%20has%20important%20effects%20on%20the%20trophic%20ecology%20of%20sea%20stars%2C%20both%20across%20the%20entire%20Southern%20Ocean%20and%20within%20ecoregions.%20Indeed%2C%20coastal%20sea%20stars%20may%20exploit%20food%20webs%20supported%20by%20a%20variety%20of%20pelagic%20and%20benthic%20primary%20producers%20while%20deeper%20sea%20stars%20may%20depend%20on%20the%20sedimentation%20of%20the%20surface%20primary%20production.%20Coastal%20sea%20stars%20are%20then%20characterised%20by%20a%20high%20diversity%20of%20food%20sources%2C%20while%20deeper%20sea%20stars%20have%20a%20higher%20diversity%20of%20trophic%20positions%20than%20coastal%20ones.%20The%20lower%20diversity%20and%20availability%20of%20food%20sources%20in%20deep%20waters%20may%20induce%20the%20diversification%20of%20sea%20star%20feeding%20behaviours%20%28e.g.%20omnivory%2C%20predation%2C%20sediment%20feeding%29%2C%20which%20would%20reduce%20competition%20between%20species.%20The%20impact%20of%20sea%20ice%20on%20the%20trophic%20ecology%20of%20sea%20stars%20was%20also%20investigated.%20The%20sympagic%20communities%20may%20be%5Cn%5Cnused%20as%2 lt%20echinoderms%22%2C%22creators%22%3A%5B%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Sarah%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Di%20Giglio%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Philippe%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Dubois%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22The%20uptake%20of%20CO2%20by%20the%20ocean%20is%20causing%20major%20changes%20in%20its%20chemistry.%20These%20changes%20are%20likely%20to%20have%20detrimental%20effects%20on%20many%20organisms%20with%20a%20severe%20impact%20on%20calcifying%20species.%20With%20future%20OA%2C%20marine%20organisms%20will%20be%20submitted%20to%20hypercapnia%20%28increased%20pCO2%29%20and%20acidosis%20%28decreased%20pH%29.%20Skeleton%20production%20and%20maintenance%20could%20be%20impacted%20due%20to%20the%20increased%20energetic%20cost%20to%20calcify%20in%20less%20favourable%20conditions%20and%20direct%20corrosive%20effect%20of%20undersaturated%20seawater%20resulting%20in%20dissolution%20of%20calcium-carbonate%20unprotected%20structures.%20Postmetamorphic%20echinoderms%20%28juveniles%20and%20adults%29%20endoskeleton%20is%20made%20of%20high%20magnesium-%20calcite%2C%20one%20of%20the%20most%20soluble%20form%20of%20CaCO3.%20Because%20of%20their%20low%20metabolism%20and%20their%20heavily%20calcified%20skeleton%2C%20echinoderms%20were%20designated%20as%20species%20particularly%20at%20risk%20under%20OA.%20However%2C%20the%20effects%20of%20OA%20on%20calcification%20and%20on%20skeleton%20maintenance%20vary%20among%20closely%20related%20taxa.%20Hypotheses%20explaining%20these%20contrasted%20tolerance%20to%20OA%20were%20stated%3A%20%281%29%20regulation%20of%20the%20acid-base%20balance%2C%20which%20occurs%20in%20some%20echinoderms%20taxa%20and%20not%20others%2C%20plays%20a%20major%20role%3B%20%282%29%20populations%20living%20in%20highly%20fluctuating%20habitats%20are%20adapted%20or%20selected%2C%20which%20may%20confer%20them%20a%20better%20resistance%20to%20acidified%20conditions.%5CnThe%20goal%20of%20this%20thesis%20was%20to%20evaluate%20these%20hypotheses%20using%20a%20comparative%20approach%20in%20asteroids%20%28two%20species%29%20and%20regular%20euechinoids%20%28five%20species%29.%20The%20chosen%20species%20differ%20by%20their%20ability%20to%20regulate%20their%20acid-base%20physiology%20and%20by%20the%20amplitude%20of%20fluctuations%20in%20their%20habitats.%20The%20impacts%20of%20OA%20on%20corrosion%20and%20mechanical%20properties%20of%20their%20skeletal%20elements%20as%20well%20as%2C%20in%20selected%20species%2C%20the%20expression%20of%20biomineralization-related%20genes%20were%20investigated.%20All%20samples%20were%20obtained%20from%20individuals%20exposed%20to%20acidified%20conditions%20during%20long-term%20aquarium%20experiments%20or%20in%20situ%20exposures%20%28CO2%20vents%29.%5CnBending%20and%20compression%20mechanical%20tests%20analysed%20by%20Weibull%20statistics%20and%20expression%20of%20biomineralization-related%20genes%20appeared%20particularly%20unitive%20endpoints.%20On%20the%20contrary%2C%20occurrence%20of%20corrosion%2C%20i.e.%20observation%20in%20scanning%20electron%20microscopy%2C%20did%20not%20match%20with%20mechanical%20effects%2C%20and%20nanoindentation%20never%20revealed%20differences%20according%20to%20treatment.%5CnThe%20results%20showed%20that%20species%20which%20were%20not%20able%20to%20regulate%20their%20acid-base%20physiology%20also%20presented%20the%20most%20affected%20skeleton%20integrity%20when%20submitted%20to%20OA.%20This%20was%20particularly%20true%20for%20the%20temperate%20sea%20star%20Asterias%20rubens%20and%20the%20Mediterranean%20sea%20urchin%20Arbacia%20lixula%20whose%20skeleton%20was%20significantly%20impacted.%20In%20the%20latter%2C%20this%20went%20together%20with%20a%20down-%20regulation%20of%20biomineralization-related%20genes.%20Temperate%20and%20tropical%20sea%20urchins%20that%20regulated%20their%20acid-base%20physiology%20%28Paracentrotus%20lividus%2C%20Echinometra%20sp.%20B%20and%20sp.%20C%29%20presented%20no%5CnAbstract%5Cn%20%20ix%5Cnor%20very%20limited%20impact%20of%20OA%20on%20their%20skeleton%20and%20biomineralization-related%20gene%20expression%20%28P.%20lividus%29.%20The%20Antarctic%20species%20%28the%20sea%20star%20Odontaster%20validus%20and%20the%20sea%20urchin%20Sterechinus%20neumayeri%29%20showed%20no%20sign%20of%20acid-base%20physiology%20regulation%20but%20also%20no%20impact%20of%20acidified%20conditions%20on%20their%20skeleton.%20This%20could%20be%20linked%20to%20their%20particularly%20low%20metabolism%20or%20to%20food%20availability.%5CnLiving%20in%20fluctuating%20habitats%20did%20not%20appear%20to%20confer%20a%20particular%20resistance%20of%20the%20skeleton%20in%20front%20of%20OA.%20In%20particular%2C%20the%20sea%20star%20A.%20rubens%20from%20Kiel%20Fjord%2C%20living%20in%20highly%20fluctuating%20sea%20water%20conditions%2C%20was%20impacted%20by%20acidified%20conditions%20they%20transiently%20encounter%20every%20year.%20The%20same%20was%20true%20for%20the%20temperate%20sea%20urchin%20A.%20lix n%20Ocean%2C%20where%20the%20effects%20of%20climate%20change%20are%20already%20occurring%20and%20where%20environmental%20changes%20could%20have%20a%20deep%20and%20manifold%20impact%20on%20the%20structure%20and%20functioning%20of%20marine%20ecosystems.%20Despite%20recent%20sampling%20efforts%2C%20our%20knowledge%20of%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%20species%20distributions%20still%20faces%20many%20shortcomings%20due%20to%20the%20rather%20recent%20discovery%20of%20this%20ocean%2C%20its%20isolation%20and%20remoteness%20along%20with%20difficult%20access%20conditions.%5CnIn%20this%20context%2C%20the%20aims%20of%20this%20thesis%20are%20to%20better%20understand%20the%20factors%20that%20drive%20species%20distribution%20patterns%20at%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%20scale%2C%20and%20to%20assess%20the%20impact%20of%20climate%20change%20on%20their%20distribution.%20For%20this%20purpose%2C%20different%20types%20of%20Species%20Distribution%20Models%20%28SDM%29%20have%20been%20used.%20Echinoids%20%28sea%20urchins%29%2C%20which%20are%20common%20organisms%20of%20benthic%20communities%20in%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%2C%20have%20been%20used%20as%20a%20biological%20model%20for%20this%20work.%20In%20order%20to%20generate%20correlative%20SDM%2C%20a%20database%20of%20echinoid%20occurrences%20has%20been%20updated.%20The%20sampling%20effort%20was%20thus%20mapped%20and%20quantified%20for%20the%20entire%20Southern%20Ocean.%20It%20prooved%20very%20heterogeneous%2C%20mainly%20restricted%20to%20shallow%20areas%20and%20scientific%20stations.%5CnThis%20sampling%20effort%20can%20generate%20potential%20bias%20in%20the%20predictive%20performance%20of%20SDM%20and%20spatial%20projections.%20The%20robustness%20of%20correlative%20SDMs%20was%20therefore%20tested%20with%20regard%20to%20sampling%20effort%2C%20the%20size%20of%20the%20species%20niches%20as%20well%20as%20their%20biogeography.%20This%20approach%20has%20highlighted%20the%20importance%20of%20abiotic%20factors%20for%20explaining%20large-scale%20species%20distribution.%20It%20appears%20that%20a%20better%20sampling%20effort%20can%20help%20generate%20robust%20SDM%2C%20but%20the%20results%20are%20strongly%20dependent%20on%20the%20ecological%20niche%20size%20and%20the%20presence%20of%20biogeographic%20barriers.%20These%20individual-species%20SDM%20were%20then%20performed%20for%20many%20species%20and%20combined%20together%20to%20define%20ten%20ecoregions%20at%20the%20scale%20of%20the%20Southern%20Ocean%2C%20which%20are%20distinguished%20by%20their%20species%20composition%20and%20environmental%20settings.%20Results%20show%20a%20separation%20between%20Antarctic%20and%20subantarctic%20fauna%20and%20the%20existence%20of%20a%20faunal%20connectivity%20between%20South%20America%20and%20the%20sub-Antarctic%20islands%20as%20well%20as%20between%20New%20Zealand%20and%20the%20Ross%20Sea.%20They%20also%20highlight%20the%20importance%20of%20environmental%20factors%20such%20as%20seafloor%20temperature%2C%20depth%2C%20and%20geomorphology%20for%20explaining%20species%20distribution.%20Future%20projections%20have%20been%20produced%20based%20on%20IPCC%20RCP%208.5%20scenario.%20Results%20show%20that%20sub-Antarctic%20regions%20might%20be%20particularly%20impacted%20by%20environmental%20changes%2C%20including%20within%20the%20network%20of%20Marine%20Protected%20Areas%20%28MPA%29%20set%20up%20in%20the%20Southern%20Ocean.%5CnThe%20relevance%20of%20correlative%20SDM%20have%20been%20strongly%20questioned%20in%20the%20literature%20due%20to%20their%20limitation%20in%20taking%20into%20account%20biological%20processes%20linking%20species%20to%20the%20environment%20and%20in%20extrapolating%20for%20future%20projections.%20Mechanistic%20SDM%20based%20on%20the%20Dynamic%20Energy%20Budget%20approach%20were%20therefore%20produced%20for%20the%20species%20Sterechinus%20neumayeri%20%28Meissner%2C%201900%29%20based%20on%20our%20knowledge%20of%20the%20species%20development%20and%20growth.%20Comparison%20between%20correlative%20and%5Cn7%5Cnmechanistic%20SDM%20made%20it%20possible%20to%20assess%20their%20complementarity%20and%20to%20propose%20robust%20projections%20for%20the%20current%20period.%20In%20contrast%2C%20future%20projections%20revealed%20strong%20divergences%20between%20models%2C%20highlighting%20the%20need%20to%20use%20different%20modeling%20approaches%20to%20better%20understand%20large-scale%20species%20distributions%20and%20assess%20the%20impact%20of%20climate%20change%20on%20marine%20biodiversity%20in%20the%20Southern%20Ocean.%22%2C%22thesisType%22%3A%22PhD%20Thesis%22%2C%22university%22%3A%22Universit%5Cu00e9%20Libre%20de%20Bruxelles%2C%20Universit%5Cu00e9%20de%20Bourgogne%20Franche%20Comt%5Cu00e9%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222018%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22fr%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22S74U6VYZ%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222023-05-16T14%3A00%3A55Z%22%7D%7D%2C%7B%22key%22%3A%2258IXFKB8%22%2C%22library%22%3A%7B%22id%22%3A2391800%7D%2C%22meta%22%3A%7B%22lastModifiedByUser%22%3A%7B%22id%22%3A6096624%2C%22username%22%3 n%20was%20obtained%20on%20a%20reduced%20number%20of%20species%20and%20significant%20interspecific%20differences%20were%20evidenced.%20Some%20taxa%20have%20not%20been%20investigated%20at%20all.%20Furthermore%2C%20several%20aspects%20of%20the%20acid-base%20physiology%20were%20unexplored%2C%20like%20the%20buffering%20capacity%20of%20the%20extracellular%20fluid%20and%20the%20origin%20of%20carbon%20within%20these%20fluids.%5Cn%20%5CnAccordingly%2C%20the%20goal%20of%20this%20study%20was%20to%20characterize%20the%20acid-base%20physiology%20in%20post-metamorphic%20echinoderms%20of%20different%20taxa%20in%20order%20to%20understand%20their%20response%20to%20ocean%20acidification.%5CnThe%20acid-base%20regulation%20capacities%20within%20the%20different%20echinoderm%20taxa%20were%20compared.%20A%20method%20was%20designed%20to%20measure%20the%20total%20alkalinity%20in%20small%20volumes%20%28500%20%5Cu03bcl%29%20of%20the%20main%20extracellular%20fluid%20%28the%20coelomic%20fluid%29.%20This%20study%20showed%20that%20regular%20euechinoids%20have%20an%20increased%20buffer%20capacity%20in%20their%20coelomic%20fluid%20compared%20to%20seawater%20and%20the%20other%20echinoderm%20groups.%20In%20sea%20urchins%2C%20bicarbonate%20and%20non-bicarbonate%20buffers%20come%20into%20play%2C%20the%20former%20playing%20the%20major%20role.%20This%20buffer%20capacity%20was%20increased%20in%20fed%20individuals%20compared%20to%20fasted%20ones%20and%20increased%20further%20when%20seawater%20pH%20was%20lowered.%5CnThe%20acid-base%20regulation%20capacities%20of%20sea%20urchins%20from%20different%20taxa%20were%20investigated.%20Regular%20euechinoids%20possess%20an%20increased%20buffer%20capacity%20of%20the%20coelomic%20fluid%20allowing%20them%20to%20maintain%20a%20higher%20pH%20compared%20to%20cidaroids%20at%20current%20seawater%20pH.%20This%20pattern%20was%20found%20for%20temperate%2C%20tropical%20and%20Antarctic%20sea%20urchins.%20Data%20was%20also%20obtained%20for%20irregular%20echinoids%20which%20also%20showed%20a%20particularly%20low%20extracellular%20pH%20and%20a%20buffer%20capacity%20close%20to%20seawater%20like%20cidaroids.%20When%20exposed%20to%20reduced%20seawater%20pH%20%288.0%2C%207.7%2C%20and%207.4%29%20for%204-6%20weeks%2C%20regular%20euechinoids%20showed%20an%20increasing%20buffer%20capacity%20of%20the%20coelomic%20fluid%20accompanied%20by%20a%20homeostasis%20of%20the%20pH.%20On%20the%20contrary%2C%20cidaroids%20showed%20no%20changes%20in%20their%20acid-base%20status%20whatever%20the%20seawater%20pH%20%288.0%20to%207.4%29.%20The%20origin%20of%20coelomic%20fluid%20carbon%2C%20investigated%20by%20stable%20carbon%20isotope%20analysis%2C%20also%20differs%20according%20to%20taxa.%20The%20%5Cu03b413CDIC%20of%20regular%20euechinoids%20evidenced%20a%20mixing%20between%20CO2%20from%20metabolic%20origin%20and%20that%20from%20the%20surrounding%20seawater.%20This%20is%20further%20supported%20by%20the%20correlation%20between%20the%20seawater%20signal%20of%20reduced%20pH%20conditions%20%28modified%20by%20the%20addition%20of%20industrial%20gas%2C%20changing%20the%20%5Cu03b413C%20to%20more%20negative%20values%29%20and%20that%20of%20the%20coelomic%20fluid.%20On%20the%20other%20hand%2C%20cidaroids%20exhibit%20a%20signal%20reflecting%20principally%20metabolic%20CO2%20%28very%20negative%20%5Cu03b413C%29%2C%20and%20the%20%5Cu03b413C%20did%20not%20change%20under%20varying%20pH%20conditions%20%28i.e.%20did%20not%20adapt%20to%20the%20seawater%20%5Cu03b413CDIC%20signature%29.%20For%20irregular%20echinoids%2C%20the%20carbon%20origin%20is%20unclear%20as%20some%20species%20show%20signals%20close%20to%20that%20of%20regular%20euechinoids%20whereas%20others%20are%20similar%20to%20cidaroids.%5CnThe%20impact%20of%20acid-base%20regulation%20was%20investigated%20by%20testing%20the%20effect%20of%20ocean%20acidification%20on%20the%20mechanical%20properties%20of%20the%20skeleton%20%28test%20plates%29%20in%20the%20sea%20urchin%20Paracentrotus%20lividus.%20Individuals%20from%20intertidal%20pools%2C%20CO2%20vents%20and%20a%20one%20year%20acidification%20experiment%20%28pH%208.0%2C%207.9%20and%207.7%29%20were%20compared.%20Only%20the%20intertidal%20pool%20individuals%20showed%20a%20difference%20of%20the%20Young%5Cu2019s%20modulus%20and%20fracture%20forces%20of%20their%20plates.%20Sea%20urchins%20from%20the%20tide%20pool%20with%20the%20largest%20pH%20fluctuations%20showed%20a%20lower%20stiffness%20and%20strengthened%20test.%20On%20the%20contrary%2C%20sea%20urchins%20from%20CO2%20vents%20and%20experimental%20acidification%20did%20not%20display%20any%20differences%20in%20the%20several%20mechanical%20properties%20tested.%20We%20suggest%20that%20the%20different%20food%20qualities%20%28calcified%20vs.%20uncalcified%20algae%29%20in%20the%20different%20tide%20pools%20significantly%20contributed%20to%20the%20observed%20difference.%5Cn%5CnThe%20acid-base%20regulation%20ability%20of%20sea%20cucumbers%20was%20assessed%20in%20two%20species%20from%20contrasted%20habitats%20%28mangrove%20i and%20generally%20recognized%20as%20a%20good%20bioindicator%20species%2C%20the%20common%20NE%20Atlantic%20sea%20star%20Asterias%20rubens%20%28L.%29%20is%20an%20ecosystem-structuring%20species%20in%20the%20North%20Sea%20and%20was%20chosen%20as%20an%20experimental%20model.%20The%20present%20study%20focused%20on%20the%20characterization%20of%20PCB%20bioaccumulation%20in%20A.%20rubens%20exposed%20through%20different%20routes%20%28seawater%2C%20food%2C%20sediments%29%20and%20on%20subsequent%20biological%20responses%2C%20at%20immune%20and%20sucellular%20levels.%20The%20considered%20responses%20were%20respectively%20%28i%29%20the%20production%20of%20reactive%20oxyggen%20species%20%28ROS%29%20by%20sea%20stars%20amoebocytes%2C%20which%20constitutes%20the%20main%20line%20of%20defence%20of%20echinoderms%20against%20pathogenic%20challenges%20and%20%28ii%29%20the%20induction%20of%20a%20cytochrome%20P450%20immunopositive%20protein%20%28CYP1A%20IPP%29%20which%2C%20in%20vertebrates%2C%20is%20involved%20in%20PCB%20detoxification.%20Experimental%20exposures%20carried%20out%20have%20shown%20that%20A.%20rubens%20efficiently%20accumulates%20PCBs.%20Exposure%20concentrations%20were%20always%20adjusted%20to%20match%20those%20encountered%20in%20the%20field.%20PCB%20concentrations%20reached%20in%20sea%20stars%20during%20the%20experiments%20matched%20the%20values%20reported%20in%20field%20studies%21%3B%20therefore%20our%20experimental%20protocol%20was%20found%20to%20accurately%20simulate%20actual%20field%20situations.%20Uptake%20kinetics%20were%20related%20to%20the%20planar%20conformation%20of%20the%20considered%20congeners%21%3A%20non-coplanar%20PCB%20uptake%20was%20described%20using%20saturation%20models%2C%20whereas%20coplanar%20PCBs%20%28c-PCBs%29%20were%20bioaccumulated%20according%20to%20bell-shaped%20kinetics.%20Noncoplanar%20congeners%20generally%20reached%20saturation%20concentrations%20whithin%20a%20few%20days%20or%20a%20few%20weeks%2C%20which%20means%20that%20sea%20stars%20can%20be%20used%20to%20pinpoint%20PCB%20contamination%20shortly%20after%20occurrence.%20On%20the%20other%20hand%2C%20c-PCB%20concentrations%20reached%20a%20peak%20followed%20by%20a%20sudden%20drop%2C%20indicating%20the%20probable%20occurrence%20of%20c-PCB-targeted%20metabolization%20processes%20in%20sea%20stars.%20Our%20experimental%20studies%20also%20demonstrated%20that%20seawater%20was%20by%20far%20the%20most%20efficient%20route%20for%20PCB%20uptake%20in%20sea%20stars%20and%20that%20even%20if%20PCB%20levels%20in%20seawater%20are%20extremely%20low%20compared%20to%20sediment-associated%20concentrations%2C%20seawater%20constitutes%20a%20non-negligible%20rout%5Cn%5CnSUMMARY%2012%20for%20PCB%20uptake%20in%20marine%20invertebrates.%20Among%20the%20different%20body%20compartments%2C%20bodywall%20displayed%20the%20highest%20bioaccumulative%20potency%20and%20can%20therefore%20be%20considered%20as%20particularly%20interesting%20for%20field%20biomonitoring%20applications.%20Rectal%20caeca%2C%20which%20play%20a%20central%20role%20in%20digestion%20and%20excretion%20processes%20in%20sea%20stars%2C%20have%20also%20rised%20particular%20interest%20as%20results%20suggest%20these%20organs%20could%20be%20involved%20in%20the%20elimination%20of%20PCB%2077%20degradation%20products.%20The%20field%20work%20carried%20out%20during%20the%20present%20study%20showed%20that%20PCB%20concentrations%20measured%20in%20A.%20rubens%20tissues%20reflect%20environmental%20levels%20of%20certain%20congeners.%20As%20it%20was%20the%20case%20in%20experimental%20conditions%2C%20A.%20rubens%20differentially%20accumulated%20PCB%20congeners%20according%20to%20their%20planarity.%20Strong%20relationships%20were%20found%20between%20concentrations%20measured%20in%20sediments%20and%20those%20determined%20in%20sea%20stars%20body%20wall%20for%20certain%20non-coplanar%20congeners%20%28e.g.%20118%20and%20138%29%2C%20thus%20allowing%20to%20consider%20A.%20rubens%20as%20a%20suitable%20bioindicator%20species%20for%20medium-chlorinated%20PCB%20congeners.%20On%20the%20other%20hand%2C%20sea%20stars%20appeared%20to%20be%20able%20to%20regulate%20-to%20a%20certain%20extent-%20their%20content%20in%20coplanar%20PCBs.%20This%20implies%20that%20%28i%29%20A.%20rubens%20cannot%20be%20strictly%20considered%20as%20an%20indicator%20organism%20for%20c-PCBs%20and%20%28ii%29%20c-PCBs%20probably%20affect%20essential%20aspects%20of%20sea%20star%20biology%2C%20potentially%20leading%20to%20deleterious%20effects.%20The%20present%20study%20addressed%20effects%20of%20PCB%20exposure%20on%20A.%20rubens%20biology%2C%20in%20both%20experimental%20and%20field%20conditions.%20In%20experimental%20conditions%2C%20PCBs%20were%20found%20to%20significantly%20alter%20ROS%20production%20by%20sea%20stars%20amoebocytes.%20This%20alteration%20also%20occurred%20in%20a%20congener-specific%20way%21%3A%20c-PCBs%20were%20found%20to%20significantly%20affect%2C%20and%20probably%20impair%20sea%20stars%20immune%20system%2C%20whereas%20non-coplanar%20congeners%2
